Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched in 1973 by the Government of India during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. The project's task force visualized these tiger reserves as breeding nuclei, from which surplus animals would migrate to adjacent forests.

Project Tiger was started in 1973 and India’s first 9 tiger reserves were formed.

  • Manas (Assam),
  • Palamau (Bihar),
  • Similipal (Orissa),
  • Corbett (Uttar Pradesh),
  • Kanha (Madhya Pradesh),
  • Melghat (Maharashtra),
  • Bandipur (Karnataka),
  • Ranthambhore (Rajasthan) and

In 2005, on the recommendation of the Tiger Task Force, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was established to reorganise the management of Project Tiger and India’s tiger reserves, which since then administers Project Tiger.

Until 2005, Project Tiger was the sole authority in charge of the conservation and well-being of India’s Bengal tigers. They were responsible for identifying and demarcating land for the creation of tiger reserves, rehabilitation of villages from the core areas of these reserves, rationalise human activity in the buffer zones of these reserves, facilitate the recovery of the ecosystem from the damage done by human settlements, monitor the floral and faunal changes and carry out scientific research about wildlife. It was under Project Tiger that all of India’s tiger reserves were created and managed.
