Quant Practice Questions (Time-Work) with Explanation for SBI/IBPS Bank Exams 109

Q.No. 1. A cistern normally takes 10 hours to be filled by a tap. But because of a leak, it takes 2 hours more. In how many hours will the leak empty a full cistern?
A. 60
B. 45
C. 48
D. 30

Ans. A

Tap took 2 hours more to fill the cistern.

So the water which was leaked in 12 hours is filled by tap in 2 hours.

In 2 hours, part of cistern filled = 2/10 (As tap takes 10 hours to fill the tank) = 1/5 So 1/5th  part is emptied by leak in 12 hours.
Time required to empty the full cistern= 12 X 5 = 60 Hours

Q.No. 2.   A can do a piece of work in 6 days, B in 10 days and C in 15 days. They jointly complete the work and earn Rs 300. The sum of their wages for 2 days is_________?
A. Rs 120
B. Rs 180
C. Rs 200
D. Rs 160

Ans. C.

Total days required to complete the work = 1/ (1/6 + 1/10 + 1/15) = 3 days For 3 days of work they got = 300 Rs.
So sum of their wages for 2 days = 300*2/3 = Rs 200

Q.No. 3.  A and B together can complete a job in 8 days. Both B and C, working alone can finish the same job in 12 days. A and B commence work on the job, and works for 4 days, whereupon A leaves. B continues for 2 more days and then leaves too. C now starts working and finishes the job. How many days did C require?
A. 4
B. 5
C. 8
D. 3

Ans. A.

Work done by (A+B) in first 4 days = 4/8 =1/2 Work done by B in next 2 days = 2/12 = 1/6 Remaining work = 1- (1/2 + 1/6) = 1/3
Time taken by C to complete this work = (1/3)/(1/12) = 4 Days

Q.No. 4.  A man, a woman and a boy together finish a piece of work in 6 days. If a man and a woman can do the work in 10 and 24 days respectively, then days taken by a boy to finish the work are_____?
A. 30
B. 35
C. 40
D. 45

Ans. C.

1M + 1W + 1B finish the work in = 6 days 1 M = 10 days
1 W = 24 days

i.e. 1/6 = 1/10+1/24 + 1/B => 1/B= 3/120 => B= 40 days

Q.No. 5.  A can do a piece of work in 12 days and B in 15 days. They work together for 5 days and then B left. The days taken by A to finish the remaining work are_________?
A. 3
B. 5
C. 10
D. 12

Ans. A.

Work done in 5 days = 5 (1/12 +1/15) = ¾ Remaining work= ¼
Time taken by A to finish this remaining work = (1/4)/(1/12)= 3 days

Q.No. 6.   If 8 men can reap 80 hectares in 24 days, then how many hectares can 36 men reap in 30 days?
A. 350
B. 400
C. 425
D. 450

Ans. D.

(M1D1)/W1 = (M2D2)/W2 (8 x 24)/80 = (36 x 30)/W2 W2 = (36 x 30x 80)/(8 x 24)
= 450 hectares Answer

Q.No. 7.   A cistern can be filled by two supply pipes in 20 mins and 30 mins respectively. But a waste  pipe can empty it in an hour. Both the supply pipes were opened together to fill the empty cistern, but by mistake the waste pipe was also open. How much later was the waste pipe closed, if the cistern is filled in 14 mins?
A. 6 mins
B. 8 mins
C. 10 mins
D. 12 mins

Ans. C.

Time needed by 2 supply pipes together to fill the cistern = 1/(1/20 + 1/30) = 12 minutes

But tank was filled in 14 minutes. i.e. supply pipes took 2 minutes extra to compensate the loss by waste pipe.

Part of cistern filled by supply pipes in 2 minutes = 2/12= 1/6

1/6th part cistern will be emptied by waste pipe = (1/6)/(1/60)= 10 minutes

Q.No. 8. Varun alone can do a piece of work in 16 hours while Akash alone can do it in 18 hours. They together took Rs 360 to do the same work. If with the help of Arun, they finish the piece of work in 4 hours, then how much money is paid to Arun?
A. Rs 170
B. Rs 180
C. Rs 190
D. Rs 200

Ans. C.

Varun's work for 4 hr. = 4 × 1/16 = 1/4 part Varun gets 1/4 × 360 = Rs 90
Akash's work for 4hr. = 4 × 1/18 = 2/9 part Akash gets = 2/9 × 360 = Rs 80
So, Arun gets = 360 – (90 + 80) = Rs 190

Q.No. 9. A leak can empty a completely filled tank in 25 hours. If the tank is full of water and a tap is opened which fills 3 litres of water per minute in the tank. The leak now takes 40 hours to empty the tank, then find the capacity of tank.
A. 8000 litre
B. 9000 litre
C. 12000 litre
D. 11000 litre

Ans. C.

Let the capacity of the tank = x litres

Quantity of water emptied by the leak in 1hr. = x/25 litres Quantity of water filled by the tap in 1 hour = 180 litre Therefore x/25 - x/40 = 180

x = 12000

Capacity of tank = 12000 L

Q.No. 10. 12 men and 16 women together can complete a work in 4 days. It takes 80 days for one man alone to complete the same work, then how many days would be required for one woman alone to complete the same work?
A. 140 days
B. 160 days
C. 145 days
D. 158 days

Ans. B.

1 man's one day’s work = 1/80
1 man's 4 day's work = 1/80 × 4 = 1/20 12 men's 4 day's work = 12/20 = 3/5
Remaining 2/5 of the work is done by 16 women in 4 days Therefore whole work is done by 16 women in = 4 x 5 /2 = 10 days
One woman alone can finish the work in 160 days.
