SBI clerk promotion process


Staffs of bank are divided into two categories viz clerical cadre and officer cadre. Promotion aspects are given below.
Series of How to get promotion from Clerk to Officer in PSU Bank.


Ans. 1

In-cadre promotion of clerks
  • A person in clerical cadre      who has completed ten years of service will be promoted to the post of      Senior Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of Rs.1800/-.
  • A person in clerical cadre who      has completed twenty  years of service will be promoted to the post      of Special Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of      Rs.2500/- which will be ranked for DA & HRA
  • A person in clerical cadre who      has completed thirty years of service will be promoted to the post of      Senior Special Assistant. This post shall carry a special allowance of      Rs.3500/- which will be ranked for DA & HRA





Promotion of clerks to officer cadre
  • To      Trainee officer
         After three years of service, a clerk can become trainee officer after      clearing written test and interview. Such clerks are put under probation      for a period of two years. After successful completion of probation, the      trainee officer based on performance will be either recruited into MMGS-II      cadre or sent back to clerical cadre.
  • Directly      to JMGS-I
    After six years of service under fast track promotion channel or after      twelve years of service under normal promotion channel, a clerk can become      a JMGS-Scale1 officer, after clearing a written test and interview,      subject to upper age limit.

Assuming a very sincere person joins in clerical cadre and works his way to the top, in merit channels, his career graph could look like the one in the picture below







Note: There are many a sub-clauses governing the above rules and regulations including age limits, number of chances of promotion, further educational qualifications and so on. The circulars released by respective banks from time to time are the best source of information. 
Note2: The above information is with respect to SBI and all other PSB’s usually have similar policies. 
  
Note 3: JGMS-1 is called Probationary Officer, Assistant Managers and Managers come under MMGS-II, Senior Managers come under MMGS-III.


Ans. 2
An SBI Clerk promotee can get promoted to Officer's cadre through 3 means:
  1. TO examination- This is an internal exam conducted for clerks in SBI to get promoted to Officer's cadre. The salary and perks on getting promoted are equivalent to that of a PO. A clerk becomes eligible to appear in the TO exam after (i)minimum 3 years of service alongwith completion of CAIIB or (ii)minimum 4 years of service along with completion of JAIIB or (iii)minimum 6 years of service.
  2. OJM- This is another internal exam for clerks to get promoted to Officer's cadre. The eligibility to appear in this exam is minimum 6 years of service in the bank. The perks are equivalent to that of a PO but salary is lesser (about 6000 p.m. at present).
  3. PO exam- You can appear in the exam conducted by SBI for recruitment of POs and get selected through the regular process.
