Odisha receives highest-ever allocation of Rs 4,682 cr in Rail budget

  • Odisha received the highest-ever allocation of 4,682 crore rupees against its demand of 5,000 crore rupees in the Railway budget presented by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
  • While presenting the budget, the Railway Minister has proposed eight new lines for Jeypore-Malkangiri, Jeypore-Nabarangpur, Berhampur Sambalpur, Junagarh-Ambaguda via Nabarangpur, Bansapani-Badabil, Barsuan-Bansapani, Bandhamunda-Rourkela and Narayangarh-Bhadrak.
  • In the previous 2015-16 Railway Budget, the State had received 78.56 per cent or 2,514 crore rupees as against 3,200 crore rupees demanded by Odisha.

New App launched for unreserved ticketing

  • As Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu presented the Railway Budget for 2016-17, the General Manager of Eastern Railways Ashok Kumar Goel launched a mobile app for unreserved ticketing system.
  • At the Eastern Railway headquarters at the Fairlie Place, Goel launched a new mobile application for the Howrah- Kharagpur section.
  • The app-based facility will work for GPS enabled smartphones having good internet connectivity. Through the application passengers will be able to book tickets well in advance within two kilometre range.

Lok Sabha Passes Election Laws (Amendment) Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed a bill to grant voting rights to people who became citizens of the country following the exchange of enclaves between India and Bangladesh, even as the Opposition questioned the delay on part of the government in bringing the measure.
  • Moving the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for consideration and passage, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda urged the members to pass the Bill without delay.
  • The minister had introduced in the Lok Sabha the Bill to amend Section 11 of the Delimitation Act, 2002 and Section 9 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The Bill was later passed unanimously by a voice vote.

Kalikho Pul wins floor test as 17 Tuki supporters remain absent

  • Newly-appointed Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul won the vote of confidence without any opposition on the first day of the state assembly session, with 17 Congress MLAs including former chief minister Nabam Tuki remaining absent in the House.
  • While chief minister Pul moved the motion seeking confidence of the House, all 40 members including himself who were present raised their hands and backed the motion.

US submits tougher sanctions to UN against North Korea

  • United States, backed by China, has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council aimed at imposing tougher sanctions on North Korea. It comes in response to North Korea’s recent nuclear test and missile launch.
  • The measures would for the first time require UN member states to inspect all cargo to or from North Korea.

Italy approves gay civil unions bill

  • Italy’s Senate has approved a landmark bill recognising same-sex civil unions. The text maintains provisions including the right to a residence permit for foreign partners and to take a same-sex partner’s name.
  • Prime Minister Matteo Renzi put his government on the line for the bill, resorting to a confidence vote in the Senate to push through the amended text.

Justice Vineet Saran to be sworn in as Chief Justice of Orissa HC

  • Justice Vineet Saran will be sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Governor SC Jamir will administer the oath to the Chief Justice .
  • Justice Saran was earlier officiating as a judge of Karnataka High Court. The post of Odisha Chief Justice was lying vacant after Justice DH Waghela was transferred to the Bombay High Court in February last year.

Vijay Mallya steps down as United Spirits Chairman

  • Vijay Mallya has resigned from the post of chairman and non-executive director of United Spirits, ending months of acrimonious battle with parent, the London-based Diageo.
  • UB Group chairman Mallya walks away from the USL board with a sweetheart deal with Diageo, which gives him $75 million spread over five years, of which about $40 million will be paid during the first year. The money is in lieu of the non-compete agreement.
  • MK Sharma, a former vice-chairman of Hindustan Unilever and an independent non-executive director and chairman of the audit committee of USL, will be the new chairman of the board.

EPFO tightens norms for withdrawal of Provident Fund

  • Retirement fund body, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has tightened norms on withdrawal of provident fund as well investment of such amount in Varishtha Pension Bima Yojana for its over five crore subscribers.
  • Now, the subscribers will not be able to claim withdrawal of their provident fund after attaining age of 54 years. A senior official told that they would have to wait till attaining the age 57 years. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified new rules.

RBI to buy Rs 12,000 crore of government bonds

  • Amid rising bond yields and an impending increase in liquidity deficit, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will infuse up to Rs.12,000 crore of liquidity by buying government bonds under open market operations on 3 March.
  • The liquidity deficit in the banking system has been around Rs.1.5 trillion over the past two months, mainly because of the build-up of the government’s cash balance with RBI. The central bank’s foreign exchange interventions in the recent past have also increased the deficit.
  • Banks’ borrowings from the various repo tenders of the RBI have risen to Rs.1.8 trillion as of 24 February from an average of Rs.1.4 trillion in January.

Trade ties between India, Malaysia going strong

  • Leveraging electronics and Information Technology industry can strengthen trade ties between India and Malaysia, according to C Sarat Chandran, Director of India-Asean-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
  • According to his speech, Malaysia moving from resource-based economy to digital economy, it presents a huge potential for outsourcing back-office operations for India.

Infosys raises CEO Vishal Sikka’s annual salary to $11 million, hands out more stock options

  • As part of the new proposed compensation structure, Sikka stands to make about $11 million every year, starting January 2017.
  • Infosys has rewarded Sikka with a significantly higher component of stock options and reduced the part of his salary that was linked to variable pay. As part of his old contract, Sikka made $7.08 million, including stock options.

Rajendra Singh is Coast Guard DG

The government has appointed Rajendra Singh as the Director General (DG) of Coast Guard, the country’s coastal protection force. This is the first time an officer from within has been promoted as its Chief which was traditionally headed by a three-star Naval officer.
About Mr. Singh
  • Mr. Singh joined the Coast Guard in 1980 and is currently the Additional Director General. He will replace Vice Admiral HCS Bisht who has been promoted as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.
  • He was awarded the Tatrakshak Medal (TM) by the President on August 15, 1990. In recognition of his distinguished service, he was awarded President’s Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) on Aug 15, 2002.

Google’s new AI can determine image location without geotags

  • Today, MIT Tech Review details a new project led by Tobias Weyand, a computer vision specialist at Google. The project breaks photos down to the pixel-level and then tries to cross-reference these pixels with its massive image library to determine where they best fit.
  • The sophisticated AI, named PlaNet was fed over 90 million geotagged images from all across the globe. In a trial using 2.3 million images, PlaNet determined the country of origin 28.4 percent of the time and the continent of origin in 48 percent of cases.

FICCI, sports ministry confer Lalita Babar with sportsperson of the year award

  • Long-distance runner Lalita Babar was named the Sportsperson of the Year in the India Sports Awards 2015.
  • The Indian Sports Award were given away in the Capital on the last day of the ‘Turf 2015-16’, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with the support of the sports ministry.

  • Babar qualified for the Rio Olympics recently im 3000m steepelchase event and is also the current national-record holder.
  • She also won a bronze medal in 2014 Incheon Asian Games and is the current Asian champion.
  • Besides Babar, gymnast Dipa Karmakar was named the breakthrough sportsperson of the year while Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India was conferred with the best national sports federation award.
Note: Hockey legend Balbir Singh has been conferred with the lifetime achievement award.
