India gets its first underwater restaurant in Ahmedabad
  • India has got its first underwater restaurant in Ahmedabad, giving a new experience to food lovers. According to reports, the restaurant – The Real Poseidon – has a dining area which has been created 20 feet below ground level.
  • Run by Ahmedabad-based businessman, Bharat Bhatt, the 32-seater restaurant serves a range of cuisine, which includes Thai, Mexican and Indian Food. Though the restaurant will only cater to the vegetarian palate.
  • The unique restaurant will be 20-feet below the ground level and is covered with a huge aquarium which has 1,60,000 litres of water. The aquarium is filled with around 4000 different species of fishes in it.

‘Khadi’ is key to India’s success, says PM Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’
  • Highlighting benefits of the just- announced Crop Insurance Scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said awareness about it should be spread across the country so that at least 50 per cent of the farmers join it within two years.
  • In his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he also pitched for continued efforts to popularise Khadi and awarness to save girl child, mentioned about the recently launched ‘Start-Up India’ programme and talked about the upcoming International Fleet Review to be held in Visakhapatnam.
  • Modi said he needs the “maximum help” from people about spreading awareness regarding the Pradhan Mantri Crop Insurance Scheme which was launched earlier this month.

India’s 1st railway university to come up in Gujarat
  • Vadodara will be home to the country’s first railway university, minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha has said.
  • Sinha, who is on a two days visit to Gujarat, said that the state government was helping Indian Railways identify land to set up a full-fledged railway university.

‘Visa on arrival’ to attract Japan, Korea investors
  • After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement in December that all Japanese citizens would get “visas on arrival”, the government has decided to extend it only to the business community for now.
  • The government is actively considering including South Korea in this category. Officials in the know say this was being done keeping in mind the “Make in India” policy of the government and to make India an attractive destination for investors from the two countries.
  • Japan and South Korea are already on the list of 113 countries whose citizens can arrive in India through an electronic tourist visa on arrival (e-TV) platform.

2.8 million Cancer deaths in China in 2015
  • Some 2.8 million Chinese may have died of cancer in 2015 or over 7,500 deaths daily, according to a new study.
  • It also estimated that nearly 4.3 million were diagnosed in 2015, with 12,000 new cases daily.
  • The study has been published by the US medical journal ‘CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.’

Rs one lakh crore disbursed in loans for small businesses: Amit Shah
  • Narendra Modi government has ensured that more than Rs one lakh crore in loans is disbursed to micro units and enterprises in just one financial year, BJP president Amit Shah said as he termed it as a big “success” in providing self employment to people.
  • Addressing a gathering after distributing small loans to poor and landless people at an event here, Shah rued that around 60 crore people did not have bank accounts even six decades after independence.

India needs $1 trillion for new roads, ports, airports: Gadkari
  • Terming infrastructure building as a “major challenge”, Union minister Nitin Gadkari has said the country requires $1 trillion for the development of new roads, ports and airports over the next few years.
  • Upgrading infrastructure is a major challenge for policy makers of the Asia’s third largest economy and India needs about $1 trillion (about Rs 67,00,000 crore) for new roads, ports and airports over the next few years, Gadkari said at the inaugural edition of Rajya Sabha Television’s new flagship programme ‘Spotlight’.

Tamil Nadu to set up 800MW supercritical coal-based power plant
  • Tamil Nadu government has set the ball rolling for establishing the state’s first 800MW supercritical coal-based power plant, with chief minister Jayalalithaa laying the foundation stone for the Rs 6,000 crore project.
  • Public sector unit BHEL has been awarded contract for the Rs 6,376 crore project which will come up at Athipattu in Tiruvallur district over 250 acres of land, the government said.

Wi-Fi deployment gains momentum
  • Growing number of people with advanced smartphones and wanting to stay connected facilitating rapid adoption free high-speed public Wi-Fi service was unveiled at Mumbai Central Station by RailTel in partnership with Google in January.
  • In Karnataka, BSNL set up a high-speed Wi-Fi service at 20 popular spots last week. In November last year, Facebook said it was partnering with BSNL to create 100 Wi-Fi hotspots in rural India.

Infosys, TCS invest in Barack Obama’s ‘Computer Science for All’ plan
  • India’s top software exporters have joined the likes of Google and Salesforce to support US President Barack Obama’s just announced $4-billion ‘Computer Science for All’ initiative that aims to dramatically increase the number of children with access to computer science training in the US and build a more technologically advanced nation.
  • Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have made investments as part of a public private partnership through a National Science Foundation (NSF), which will put in $120 million to support and train computer science teachers in schools, a statement from the White House said.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg set to join telecom biggies at the MWC 2016
  • Mobile World Congress (MWC) sees the biggest names in telecoms head to Barcelona for the industry’s annual trade fair, unveiling new technologies and sharing their visions of the sector’s future. It looks like Mark Zuckerberg is once again set to steal the limelight at the 2016 event.
  • As well as presenting new mobile handsets and connected devices, Mobile World Congress hosts conferences uniting the movers and shakers of the telecoms industry (product manufacturers, network providers, ISPs, etc.).

Justice (Retd.) Sanjay Mishra takes oath as UP Lokayukta
  • Former judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice (Retired) Sanjay Mishra, took oath as the new Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Supreme Court had recalled its earlier order of appointing Justice Virendra Singh as the state’s Lokayukta.
  • An apex court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi had appointed Justice Mishra as the Lokayukta.

Dattatray Padsalgikar takes over as Mumbai Police Commissioner
  • IPS officer Dattatray Padsalgikar took charge as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner. “I worked in Mumbai long time ago and several things have changed. The city being a dynamic and a mega-polis, (it) has several challenges,” he said.
  • He took over from outgoing Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed, who is set to go to Saudi Arabia as its Ambassador after he retired from police service.

India become No. 1 in T20Is after clean sweep over Australia
  • Team India became the number one side in the world in Twenty20 Internationals after winning T20I series against Australia a 3-0. India won the final match by 7 wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Himmat best Indian finisher at 27th spot in Singapore golf
  • Himmat Rai turned in a modest one-under 70 in the final round but managed to sign off as the best-placed Indian golfer at tied 23rd in the weather-hit $one million SMBC Singapore Open sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).
  • SSP Chawrasia was the pick of the Indians on the final day with a four-under 67, his best round of the week. That included six birdies, four of them in last seven holes.
  • But at tied-38th, he was not the best Indian, because Rai (70-69-73-70) at two-under 282 finished tied 23rd.

  • Novak Djokovic has a new goal for the year. He calls it the Djoker Slam.
  • The No. 1-ranked player has one thing missing from his fast-growing collection of 11 Grand Slam trophies.
  • Djokovic’s strong start to the season comes after a year that has been described as one of the finest in tennis history. He finished 2015 at No. 1 for the fourth time in five years. He won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Brazil’s Bruno Soares wins two Grand Slam titles on same day
  • Brazil’s Bruno Soares lifted the Australian Open mixed doubles trophy — the same day he also won the men’s doubles.
  • Soares and Russia’s Elena Vesnina, seeded five, beat the unseeded pairing of American Coco Vandeweghe and her Romanian partner Horia Tecau 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 on Rod Laver Arena.

Kidambi Srikanth wins Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold title
  • Top seed Kidambi Srikanth made a rollicking start to the new season as he clinched the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold with a convincing win over China’s Huang Yuxiang in the men’s singles final.
  • World No. 9 Srikanth, who had reached the summit clash in the last edition as well, prevailed over 73rd ranked Huang 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 to lay his hands on the crown and take home a cheque of $9000.
  • It was his fifth title having won the 2013 Thailand Grand Prix Gold, 2014 China Super Series premier and Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold and India Super Series last year.

British broadcaster Terry Wogan dies of cancer
  • British television and radio personality Terry Wogan died of cancer aged 77, his family said.
  • Irish-born Wogan, one of the BBC’s most recognisable faces and voices, was granted a British knighthood in 2005.

Kiran Bedi’s husband dies
  • Brij Bedi, social activist and the husband of first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi, died at a hospital in Gurgaon following a cardiac arrest.
  • “Brij Bedi, 76, was suffering from cancer in the bladder, which affected his kidneys too. He was undergoing treatment for the past five months both in Amritsar and Delhi,” Kiran Bedi told PTI.
