India Post rides e-commerce boom, reaps big rewards
  • For India Post, the boom in e-commerce deliveries is proving to be a big money spinner, especially the surging cash-on-delivery consignments of the country’s top online sellers Amazon, Snapdeal and Flipkart-Myntra.
  • The postal department’s revenues by ways of COD consignments from e-commerce majors have more than doubled in the first nine months of this fiscal at Rs 1,000 crore, up from Rs 500 crore during the whole of 2014-15, and just Rs 100 crore in 2013-14.
  • The incremental e-commerce revenue boost are at the heart of his plans to revive the fortunes of India’s postal service.
Delhi govt to consider restricting use of firecrackers at weddings
  • In November, soon after Diwali, a committee under the environment secretary had started reviewing various aspects of pollution caused by firecrackers. Officials said the committee may submit its recommendations to the government in two months.
  • The environment department was also considering bringing down the permissible decibel levels (145 decibels) of firecrackers and putting a stop to the use of certain metals such as copper, barium and strontium in their manufacture to bring down air pollution levels.
Plan to install 2,500 wi-fi hotspots by next fiscal
  • The Government is targeting to reach the 50-crore internet subscribers mark in the next 6-7 months, besides installing 2,500 wi-fi hotspots at 256 places by the next fiscal.
  • The minister was speaking at the inauguration of stock exchange BSE’s free wi—fi service to public, which has been launched in partnership with Tata Docomo.
  • The wi—fi hotspot project will provide a major fillip to the ‘Digital India’ initiative.
Telangana University opens e-resource centre for TSPSC exams

ISRO conceives two ‘space parks’
  • Two space industry enclaves or “parks” that have been conceived one for launchers at Sriharikota and a smaller one at an existing Bengaluru spacecraft campus signal increased privatisation of the nation’s space programme over the next five years.

Domestic IT spend to grow 13.5% in 2016
  • IT spending in the domestic market is expected to grow 13.5 per cent to Rs. 1.91 lakh crore this year.
  • According to research firm Core Quadrant, the domestic IT industry revenue in India is expected to grow to Rs. 1.91 lakh crore in 2016, against a spending of Rs. 1.68 lakh crore in 2015.
  • This will be driven by a broader set of digital initiatives, beyond the limited focus on mobility, cloud, and social media in 2015.
Reliance Group to invest Rs 5K crore in naval unit
  • Reliance Group has proposed to set up a naval shipbuilding facility in Rambilli, near Visakhapatnam. The group will be investing Rs 5,000 crore in phases in the proposed state-of-the-art facility.
  • Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani, who announced this during the CII Investor Partnership Summit, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government in this regard.

  • Kate Winslet led the early winners at the Golden Globes as an unapologetic Ricky Gervais kicked off the glitzy ceremony by taking shots at some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
