PM appreciates state’s progress, clean environment, declares it India’s first ‘organic state’

  • Branding the state as a ‘model’ for the world by achieving new heights of development & ensuring conservation of environment at the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated Sikkim’s progress in farming and declared it as the first ‘organic state’ of India.
  • Addressing the national conference on sustainable agriculture in Gangtok, the Prime Minister spoke about revolutionising agriculture and farming in India.

Solar power installed capacity in the country crosses 5000 MW

  • The total installed capacity of solar power in India has crossed the milestone of 5,000 MW. The Government has set the ambitious target of generating 100 GW of solar power by 2021-22 under the National Solar Mission.
  • It is envisaged to generate 60 GW of ground mounted grid-connected solar power and 40 GW through the roof-top grid interactive solar power to fulfil the requirement of 100 GW of solar power. The target for the current year is 2,000 MW and the next year 12,000 MW.

NOTA option for ZP, TP polls

  • When elections to 26 zilla panchayats and 175 taluk panchayats will be held on February 13 and February 20, voters will have the option of NOTA (None of the Above) for the first time in rural local body polls.
  • Although the Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Act 2015 had made provision for NOTA in rural local body elections, the option could not be introduced in the gram panchayat elections held in May.
  • Announcing the calendar of events for ZP, TP polls, State Election Commissioner P.N. Srinivasachari told presspersons that NOTA provision had been introduced in the polls this time and all the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will have the option.

China launches first online database on monks’ authenticity

  • The system was put in place to counter fake Living Buddhas, who have been found cheating believers for money.
  • For the first time, China launched an online system to check the “authenticity” of top Tibetan Buddhist monks, amid growing incidents of fraud involving religious leaders.
  • The first list of 870 verified Tibetan monks, also known as ‘Living Buddhas’, was published on the official website of the State Administration for Religious Affairs.

Gunter Butschek is Tata Motors chief

  • Gunter Butschek has been appointed Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Tata Motors, ending a long search for a suitable candidate for the post.
  • Butschek, who is expected to join the company by February 15, joins Tata Motors after his last assignment at Airbus Group where he served as CEO and Member of the Group Executive Committee.
  • He will lead all operations of Tata Motors in India and in international markets, including South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and South Africa.

  • The billionaires have come together yet again for a deal that will see Mukesh Ambani-backed Reliance Jio buying spectrum from Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications across nine circles. The deal also includes spectrum sharing across 17 circles.
  • While the financials of deal were not disclosed, sources said RCom will get an immediate payment of ₹4,500 crore from RJio.

Uber, Airbus to join hands for on-demand helicopter rides

  • California-based Uber has said that it will be partnering with France-based Airbus on a test programme to provide helicopter rides on demand through its application just as it currently does with car rides.
  • For Uber, helicopters could prove to be a big ticket item that expands its reach beyond taxi rides and helps justify its lofty USD 62.5 billion valuation.
  • Uber has also experimented with offering boats and smart routes that mimic bus lines as well as on-demand food and package deliveries, all to fuel rapid growth.

  • The service also said it will not introduce any third-party ads for monetisation.

Six children from Kerala State among bravery award winners

  • Eight children from the southern part of the country, including six from Kerala and two from Telangana, are among the 25 National Bravery award winners this year.
  • The winners will receive the award, a medal, a certificate and cash price from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on January 24. The award recipients will also participate in the Republic Day parade on January 26.
  • One of the six winners from Kerala is Aromal SM (12), who saved two children from drowning in a 14-feet deep pond. Aromal has been honoured with the Bapu Gaidhani award.

BCCI bans Ajit Chandila for life; Hiken Shah for 5 years

  • Haryana off-spinner Ajit Chandila was slapped with a life ban for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, while Mumbai batsman Hiken Shah was handed a five-year suspension for making a corrupt approach to a fellow player as the BCCI disciplinary committee sealed their fate.
  • However, the committee, headed by BCCI President Shashank Manohar and comprising Jyotiraditya Scindia and Niranjan Shah, deferred a decision on Chandila’s co-accused Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf till February 12, giving him a final deadline of February 9 to file his reply.
