India crowned world’s fastest growing aviation market in 2015 as economy takes off
  • India was the world’s fastest growing aviation market in 2015, expanding more than 20pc as economic growth on the subcontinent picked up.
  • The country’s air travel industry outpaced the 10pc growth registered in China and 5pc increase in the United States, according to International Air Transport Association.
  • It is widely expected that the South Asian nation will clock 7.3pc to 7.9pc growth in 2016.
Government to introduce startup blueprint this month
  • The government, in two weeks, will unveil a blueprint for startups to ease the process of setting up new ventures.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the blueprint of ‘Start Up India’ programme which may include a Startups and Entrepreneurship Law to make it easier for setting up new ventures and closing unviable ones, besides clearing regulatory issues that hamper access to finance.
Full implementation of DAVA project to check fake drugs export
  • Full implementation of DAVA (Drug Authentication and Verification Application) project will help check export of spurious drugs from the country.
  • The project has won the 2015 eASIA Award under Trade Facilitation category as announced by Asia Pacific Council for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (AFACT) in Tehran.
  • DAVA project, launched on June 29, 2015, created an integrated platform for implementation of the track and trace system both for exports and domestic markets of drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Asean To Launch Trade Bloc To Integrate Southeast Asian Markets
  • Ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) will launch an ambitious trade pact to integrate their markets and allow unrestricted flow of labor, services and capital across the region.
  • The U.S.-backed Asean Economic Community (AEC)  Asean’s business council formally adopted a game plan for the next decade, which plans to boost economic ties between the countries in hopes of building an open cross-border market and production base.
  • The trade bloc also aims to consolidate to better face competition from China and Japan, and expects its $2.6 trillion combined economy to almost double by 2030.
India, Pakistan exchange list of nuke installations, prisoners
  • India and Pakistan exchanged for the 25th consecutive year a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral agreement that bars them from attacking each other’s atomic facilities.
  • This is the 25th consecutive exchange of such list between the two countries, the first one having taken place on January 1, 1992.
  • The two countries also exchanged, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the lists of nationals (including civil prisoners and fishermen) of each country lodged in their respective jails.
 Petronet inks significant gas pact with Qatar’s RasGas
  • In a move that will save consumers around Rs 4000 crore, Petronet LNG, India’s biggest gas importer, signed a revised contract with RasGas of Qatar to import gas at a significantly lower price to reflect falling global prices.
  • According to Junior Minister for Oil and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, the new contract will save downstream consumers in India around Rs.4,000 crore a year.
Javeed Ahmed appointed as new U.P. police chief
  • A 1984-cadre of the Indian Police Services, Javeed Ahmed, was appointed as the new Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh.
About Mr.Ahmed:
  • Mr. Ahmed, 55, replaced Jagmohan Yadav, who retired after 32 years of service. While Mr. Yadav, a 1983-batch officer retired after only six months as DGP, Mr. Ahmed has five more years of service.
  • Mr. Ahmed was serving as the DG Railways in Lucknow. The Patna-born officer enjoys a clean image and a good record in policing. He also served as a joint director in the Central Bureau of Investigation during his central deputation.
After 46 transfers in 22 years, Khemka promoted as principal secretary
  • The New Year has brought cheer for whistleblower IAS officer Ashok Khemka with the Haryana government promoting him to the post of principal secretary. A departmental promotion committee (DPC), headed by Haryana chief secretary D S Dhesi.
  • The 50-year-old bureaucrat had grabbed headlines after he cancelled a controversial land deal involving Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra’s firm and real estate giant DLF in 2012.
SBI to focus on digital branches: Arundhati Bhattacharya
  • State Bank of India has decided to scale down the pace of opening new brick and mortar branches in the country. It will open more digital branches. In the current fiscal, it will open only 500 branches against the original target of 1,000.
  • At the inauguration of the bank’s InTouch (digital) branch, Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya media persons that 250 such branches have been planned till March 31.
RBI tells banks to replace defective 1,000-rupee notes
  • Out of 300 million defective banknotes that were printed in one of the printing presses of government-owned Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India, about 100 million of those notes have hit the market leaving the general public in a tizzy.
  • About 200 million pieces were transferred to the RBI’s currency chests, some of which was then loaded in banks’ automated teller machines.
Neeraj Chopra sets World Junior Leading Mark in Javelin Throw
  • Young Indian Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra set a World-Leading Mark for Junior Athletes (Under-20) by throwing the 800 gm spear to a remarkable distance of 81.04m at the 76th All India Inter-University Athletics Championships in Patiala.
  • The 18-year old bettered his previous best of 77.67m which he had created en-route his Indian Open Nationals victory in Kolkata in September.
Dharun shatters hurdles record
  • Mangalore University’s A. Dharun broke the men’s 400m hurdles record as he won his second gold at the 76th National inter-university athletics championship. The 19-year-old Tamil Nadu-born Dharun had won the 400m
  • Meanwhile, Bharathiar’s University international Mohammed Salahuddin, son of former international Mohammed Nizamuddin, won the men’s triple jump gold while Mangalore’s K.A. Bharath and Lucknow’s Vijay Laxmi took the men’s and women’s 800m title.
