20 cities set for ₹50,802-cr makeover

  • The Centre announced the list of cities which have bagged the coveted ‘smart city tag’ under the government’s flagship mission.
  • The 20 cities are Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Dhavangiri, Indore, New Delhi Municipal Corporation, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.
  • The proposals have been judged on credibility of implementation, city vision and strategy, economic and environmental impacts, cost effectiveness, innovation and scalability and processes followed, including citizen implementation.
  • The Cabinet had approved an outlay of ₹48,000 crore for the Smart Cities Mission in April last year.

IRCTC restricts ticket booking to six per month

  • In an attempt to prevent possible misuse, Railway Ministry has introduced new checks on booking of e-ticket and i-ticket through IRCTC website.
  • Under the new provisions a maximum of six tickets can be booked online by an individual user in a month on IRCTC website. This new provision will come into effect from February 15, 2016.
The revised rules for booking ticket through IRCTC are as follows,
  1. Individuals are allowed only two tickets per user-ID in a day from 8 am to 10 am.
  2. Individuals are allowed only two tickets per user-ID in a day for Tatkal booking from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
  3. A maximum of 6 tickets can be booked online in a month by an individual.
  4. Quick Book Option is disabled from 08 am to 12 noon
  5. All types of ticketing agents (YTSK, RTSA, IRCTC agents etc.) have been debarred from booking tickets during the first thirty minutes of opening of booking i.e. from 08 am to 08:30 am for general bookings, and from 10 am to 10:30 am and 11:00 am to 11:30 am for Tatkal booking in AC and non-AC classes respectively.
  6. Booking is not allowed through e-wallet and cash cards from 8 am to 12 noon.
  7. There is only one booking in one user login session except for return/onward journey between 08 am to 12 noon.

Customs launches mobile app to inform people all about rules

  • A mobile-based application was launched by the customs to inform people about all Indian customs rules including those related to import of pets and goods.
About the App
  • It is a first-of-its-kind mobile application in the world which contains a ready reckoner of the customs baggage rules and entitlement of passengers coming from various countries.
  • The application provides information to users as per their need. After installation of app on smart phones, it works in offline mode.
  • It also provides 24×7 contact details of customs officers in major Indian airports.

Three Indians among world’s 50 wealthiest

  • Three Indians  Mukesh Ambani, Azim Premji and Dilip Shanghvi have made it to a global list of 50 wealthiest people that is topped by Bill Gates.
  • According to a new list by Wealth-X in collaboration with Business Insider, Mukesh Ambani was ranked at the 27th place on the list with a net worth of $24.8 billion, while Azim Premji and Dilip Shanghvi were ranked at the 43rd and 44th place with assets worth $16.5 billion and $16.4 billion, respectively.
  • The list was topped by Bill Gates who has a staggering wealth of $87.4 billion, followed by Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega Gaona and Warren Buffett in the second and third place with wealth of $66.8 billion and $60.7 billion.

Zika could infect 4 mn people

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) expects the Zika virus, which is spreading through the Americas, to affect between three million and four million people.
  • The WHO’s director-general said the spread of the mosquito-borne disease had gone from a mild threat to one of alarming proportions.
  • Marcos Espinal, an infectious disease expert at the WHO’s Americas regional office, said: “We can expect 3 to 4 million cases of Zika virus disease”. He gave no time frame. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, which is a close cousin of dengue and chikungunya and causes mild fever, rash and red eyes. An estimated 80 per cent of people infected have no symptoms, making it difficult for pregnant women to know whether they have been infected.

‘Indians 3rd biggest investor in US realty market at $8 bn’

  • Indians are the third biggest international investor community with $8 billion investment in the US realty market after Canadians and Chinese, brokerage firm Sotheby’s International Realty said today.
  • Besides, 25 per cent of the international real estate market in London also belongs to Indians with investments around 1 billion pounds while they also invested more than $2 billion in the Dubai real estate market in the first half of 2015 only.

Firstsource acquires BPO biz of ISGN

  • Firstsource Solutions Ltd announced the acquisition of BPO unit of ISGN, a full service provider of mortgage technology and services, for an undisclosed sum.
  • Over 700 employees from ISGN’s BPO division in the United States and India will become a part of Firstsource through this acquisition.
  • It also provides Firstsource with marquee customers, strengthens its Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) portfolio and offers significant potential opportunities for cross-selling of services, the company said in a release post its board meet here in the city.

Jaguar Land Rover launches updated XJ saloon in India at Rs. 98.03 lakh

  • The Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on launched an updated version of its luxury saloon ‘Jaguar XJ’ in India, with prices starting from Rs. 98.03 lakh (ex-showroom, pre-octroi in Mumbai).
  • With a combination of technology, craftsmanship and sporting vehicle dynamics, the new Jaguar XJ is “a blend of power and beauty”, available with a range of distinctive new features, JLR said in a statement

  • The second volume of President Pranab Mukherjee’s memoirs The Turbulent Years (1980-1996) was released even as the author himself said that “some facts are to be buried with me”.
  • Vice-President Hamid Ansari released the first copy of the book, with a fairly eclectic audience of Indian Council for Cultural Relations chief Karan Singh.

Pharmacist Purushotham Rao gets IAPST award for 2015

  • Purushotham Rao, eminent pharmacist and head of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society’s College of Pharmacy here, has bagged the prestigious Indian Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and Technologists (IAPST) Pharmaceutical Professional of the Year Award for 2015.
  • The award, carrying a gold medal, citation and a certificate, was presented to Prof. Purushotham Rao at a national seminar of IAPST at Jadavpur University in Kolkata on January 16.

Agartala, Aizawl get $80 mn ADB loan

  • India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an $80 million loan agreement for improving the infrastructure in the two North-Eastern cities of Agartala and Aizawl, according to a government statement.
  • The loan is the third tranche of a $200 million financing facility under the North-Eastern Region Capital cities Development Investment Program and will be used for investments in water supply, solid waste management and sanitation in Agartala and Aizwal. The previous two tranches were aimed at improving the infrastructure in Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima, Gangtok and Agartala.

Bank of Japan adopts negative interest rate policy

  • The Bank of Japan blindsided global financial markets by adopting negative interest rates for the first time ever, buckling under pressure to revive growth in the world’s third-largest economy.
  • In a move that was signaled by the Nikkei business daily minutes ahead of the decision, the BOJ said it will apply a rate of negative 0.1 percent to excess reserves that financial institutional place at the bank, effective February 16.
  • The BOJ left its program to buy government bonds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) unchanged.

BlackBerry’s first Android smartphone Priv launches in India

  • The Canadian smartphone maker Blackberry has finally launched its much awaited Android smartphone BlackBerry Priv in India. The company has priced the device at Rs 62,990 and it will be available from 30th January.
  • On the specifications front, the BlackBerry Priv has a 5.4-inch QHD display with 1440×2560 pixels resolution protected with a coating of Corning Gorillas Glass 4 on top. Powering the handset is a 1.8GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor coupled with 3GB RAM. It’s on board storage stands at 32GB which can be expanded up to 200GB using a microSD card.
