Union Government brings 376 drugs under the NLEM
  • The Union Government has added 106 drugs including that of HIV/AIDS, Cancer and Hepatitis C to the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM).
  • In this regard, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s core committee has revised the NLEM.
  • The committee was headed by V.M. Katoch, former secretary of Department of Health Research.
No non-veg food for passengers on short-hop AI flights
  • Come January 1, government run Air India will no longer serve non-vegetarian food to its economy class passengers on flights of up to 90 minutes duration.
  • The national carrier has also decided to strike off both tea and coffee from its lunch and dinner menu.
  • As of now, Air India serves sandwiches (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian) and cake on its flights of up to 90 minutes duration, which will be discontinued from January 1, 2016, and replaced with an “all vegetarian” hot meal.
Shifting of Secretariat by June-end: Naidu
  • Reiterating the need for quick shifting of employees to Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu his endeavour was to complete construction of buildings with a space of 6,00,000 square feet for accommodating the Secretariat by the end of June.
Government pauses software patenting norms
  • The Indian Patent Office has put in abeyance new guidelines on examination of computer-related inventions (CRIs) such as software programmes.
  • After the guidelines amending relevant provisions were out in August, several associations strongly opposed the move saying the norms are ‘detrimental’ to the domestic IT sector.
  • According to the Section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act, a mathematical or business method or a computer programme per se or algorithms are not inventions.
India, Pakistan foreign secretaries meet likely to be held on Jan 15
  • The much-awaited meeting between the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan is likely to take place on January 15 even as both sides have agreed to discuss all “outstanding issues” concerning both neighbours under the aegis of the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue.
  • This comes after Prime Minister’s surprise visit to Pakistan on December 25 to wish Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his birthday as he was returning from Afghanistan via Russia.
Nawaz Sharif to visit Sri Lanka next month
  • Deputy Foreign Minister Harsha de Silva said 10 memorandum of understandings (MoUs) and pacts are to be signed during Mr. Sharif’s visit.
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will visit Sri Lanka next month during which the two sides will sign several agreements including a pact on combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
  • This will be Mr. Sharif’s first visit to Lanka since President Maithripala Sirisena took office a year ago.
Tech Mahindra launches digital wallet MoboMoney; run a pilot in Delhi-NCR
  • MoboMoney is a prepaid wallet, issued in the form of an NFC (Near-Field Communication) contactless tag. It can be used to ‘Tap n Pay’ on a network of NFC-enabled merchant point-of-sale device.
  • IT major Tech Mahindra has launched a new service ‘MoboMoney’ to cash in on the burgeoning digital payments ecosystem in India.

ICICI Bank unveils online rail booking service
  • You can now buy rail tickets online from ICICI Bank’s website
  • Private sector lender ICICI Bank has entered into a tie-up with Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) for this purpose.
  • The novelty of this facility is that it would not be limited to customers of ICICI Bank.
  • Customers of any bank can use this service to book online rail tickets on ICICI Bank’s website itself without visiting any other website.
Reliance Jio employees to get freebies, discount on 4G service
  • The live-cast of the event will be carried on Jio’s digital network as demonstration.
  • Reliance Jio is gearing up for the unveiling of its 4G service for its employees with offers like free subscription till commercial roll out and steep discount on handsets.
  • Reliance Jio also plans a 25 per cent discount on company’s LYF mobile handsets, the source said.
Bangladesh signs $12.65-bn deal with Russia
  • Bangladesh’s state-run Atomic Energy Commission had signed a deal with Russia to set up two nuclear power plants, each with 1,200 megawatt capacity, an investment totalling $12.65 billion.
  • Work will begin early next year at Ruppur in Iswardi, 160 km (100 miles) from Dhaka, said Kamrul Islam Bhyian, spokesman for the ministry of science and technology.
Tata Power inks pact with Russian Ministry
Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Development of Russian Far East to explore and develop investment opportunities in the energy sector.
Alibaba agrees to invest $1.25 bn inChinese online food delivery service
  • Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has agreed to invest $1.25 billion in Chinese online food delivery service, leading business weekly Caixin reported.
  • The report, citing unidentified sources, said Alibaba would obtain a 27.7 per cent stake in, becoming its biggest shareholder.
INS Viraat wins last regatta
  • INS Viraat, which is expected to be decommissioned next year, was inducted into the Indian Navy in 1987 after serving the British Navy for over 30 years.
  • Aircraft-carrier INS Viraat won the coveted Cock Trophy during the Western Fleet Whaler Pulling Regatta, making it the last time the warship participated in the event before she is decommissioned.
Akshay Kumar is PBL brand ambassador
  • Premier Badminton League announced Bollywood actor and sports enthusiast Akshay Kumar as its brand ambassador. The event is set to start on January 2.
  • On the association, Akshay Kumar said: “Badminton has given us reasons to rejoice for years now and I am very excited to meet the young stars who have achieved so much on the court. Sadhana, Bollywood star and style icon, passes away at 74
Sadhana, the actor who reigned over Bollywood as its style icon for many years, passed away in Mumbai on December 25 after a brief illness.
About Sadhana
The yesteryear’s beauty, who enthralled masses with her graceful performances in Hindi films in the 60s and 70s, had retired from public life long back. The actress only kept in touch with her old pals like Asha Parekh, Helen and Waheeda Rahman.
