Bengal Cabinet puts seal on creation of 5 new districts including Kalimpong in the Hills

  • LESS than a month after a public announcement by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Cabinet cleared the proposal for creation of five new districts in the state.
  • The five districts in the offing are Sunderbans (to be carved out of North and South 24-Parganas districts), Basirhat (to be carved out of North 24-Parganas), Jhargram (to be carved out of West Midnapore and contiguous Junglemahal areas of Bankura, Purulia districts), Burdwan Rural and Burwdan Urban (by bifurcating the present Burdwan district), and Kalimpong (to be carved out of Darjeeling district.

CBSE books to be made available online for free

  • All CBSE books and learning material will be made available online for free as part of the Centre’s good governance efforts, HRD Minister Smriti Irani.
  • At a function organised at a Kendriya Vidyalaya in east Delhi, she also said that initiatives would be undertaken to ensure holistic nurturing and improve learning outcomes at these schools.
  • “We made NCERT books available online for free through e-books and mobile applications a month-and-a-half ago.


UN Security Council unanimously backs peace plan

  • The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution outlining a peace process in Syria.
  • The 15-member council reached rare agreement on the issue in a session in New York.
  • The resolution endorses talks between the Syrian government and opposition in early January, as well as a ceasefire.
  • The Syrian war, which is heading towards its fifth year, has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions more, the UN says.

Mireia Lalaguna Royo Wins the MissWorld 2015 Crown

  • The stunning grand finale of the coveted Miss World 2015 came to conclusion with Miss Spain, Mireia Lalaguna Royo being crowned as the new Miss World, at the Beauty Crown Theatre in Sanya, China.
  • Former Miss World, Rolene Strauss crowned the new winner, Mireia, in one of the most anticipated grand finales of Miss World.
  • The second and third positions were held by Miss Russia and Miss Indonesia respectively.
Miss World also awarded the following sub contest titles
  • Miss Multimedia – Philippines
  • Miss Top Model – Spain
  • Sports Champion – Namibia
  • Miss Talented – Guyana
  • Beauty with a Purpose – Indonesia
  • People’ Choice Award – Vietnam.

Country’s biggest wildlife rescue centre commissioned

  • Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis dedicated the country’s biggest wildlife rescue centre, spread in 30 hectares in Gorewada, to wildlife lovers.
  • In a hurriedly done inauguration, Fadnavis, who kept senior officials and forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar waiting for an hour, said he was committed to the development of Gorewada zoo.
  • The 26.95 crore centre though in place after 16 months delay, will be a big asset for entire Vidarbha region where man-animal conflict is at its peak.

Rare discovery of eel on West Bengal coast

  • The specimen was collected from fishing boats at a fish landing centre in Shankarpur.
  • Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India ( ZSI) have a discovered a new species of eel along the coast of Digha in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district.
  • The species, new to science, named Gymnothorax mishrai, is 32.4 cm long, brown in colour and the body is without any patterns.

Dhoni to remain captain till World T20

  • The National selectors, decided that M.S. Dhoni will remain captain of the limited-overs sides till the World T20 championship in March.
  • Before announcing the teams for India’s upcoming tour of Australia next month, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur announced the decision regarding Dhoni.

Peter Dickinson, British author, Died at 88

Peter Malcolm de Brissac Dickinson was born on December 16, 1927, and died on December 16, 2015.
About Peter Dickinson:
  • He was an English author and poet, best known for children’s books and detective stories.
  • For his contributions as a children’s writer, Peter was a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2000.
  • Peter Dickinson was born in Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), the second of the four sons of a man in the colonial service and a farmer’s daughter.
  • Peter Dickinson passed away at age 88 in December 2015.
