In Parliament gridlock, one thing BJP and Congress agree on: When to send a 16-year-old child to jail
  • The Juvenile Justice Bill, which provides for lowering the age for trial from 18 years, was passed by Rajya Sabha with a voice vote after a walkout by Left parties which wanted it to be sent to a Select Committee.
  • The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2015 that will replace the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 states that any person aged between 16 and 18 years and accused of a heinous offence  defined as a crime for which there is a sentence of seven years or more under the Indian Penal Code may be tried under the IPC and not the JJ Act.
Yoga in Tripura curriculum from 2016
  • Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has declared that Yoga would be introduced as a subject in State-run and government-aided schools from 2016.
  • Tripura government has decided to include Yoga in school curriculum in support to the national campaign.

#MakeInIndia: Vivo inaugurates its first manufacturing unit in Greater Noida
  • Vivo Mobile India starts local manufacturing of its smartphones from newly inaugurated Greater Noida unit
  • In a big push to PM Modi’s Make in India and Digital India initiative, Vivo Mobile India has commenced manufacturing its smartphones in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The unit will primarily focus on catering to needs of Vivo’s domestic demands.
  • The new manufacturing unit will assemble all Vivo smartphones currently available in India. The unit will also empower India with new job creation and most importantly decreasing Vivo’s dependence on imports.
Odd-even scheme: Fake licence plates will cost you, warns minister
  • The government will announce the rest of the policies and rules pertaining to the odd-even formula later this week.
  • Vehicle drivers found guilty of using forged licence plates, during the trial period of the Delhi government’s odd-even scheme from January 1-15 next year, will face charges of cheating, warned Transport Minister Gopal Rai.
  • “If anyone is caught using fake number plates to violate the odd-even scheme, an FIR will be registered against them on charges of cheating. A hefty fine will also be imposed. I request everybody not to indulge in forgery of any kind,” Rai said while flagging off events to mark the capital’s third car-free day.
Environment Ministry Notifies Stricter Standards for Coal Based Thermal Power Plants to Minimise Pollution
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has notified the revised standards for coal-based Thermal Power Plants in the country, with the primary aim of minimising pollution.
  • These standards are proposed to be implemented in a phased manner. Thermal power plants are categorised into 3 categories, namely those:- (i) Installed before 31st December, 2003 (ii) Installed after 2003 upto 31st December, 2016 and (iii) Installed after 31st December, 2016.
U.S. places Indian Lion in endangered species list
  • There are only about 1,400 of these lions said to be remaining.
  • The United States will place a breed of lion found in India and Africa in the endangered species list in a bid to curb the dramatic decline of their population.
  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has said it will list Panthera leo leo (a subspecies of lion) located in India and western and central Africa as endangered, and Panthera leo melanochaita, located in eastern and southern Africa, will be listed as threatened.
Essar names Jayantha Prabhu as CIO
  • Essar Group has elevated Jayantha Prabhu as its Chief Information Officer (CIO).
  • In his new role, Prabhu who was previously the Chief Technology Officer, he will be responsible for the Group’s IT strategy, enterprise architecture, information security, project delivery and Green IT and Sustainability amongst others, Essar said in a statement.
After long cooling-off period, Ajay Mathur to be TERI chief
  • Ajay Mathur, head of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), will finally take over as the new Director of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
  • Mathur, who was appointed as the new Director of government’s think tank after the Governing Council of TERI in July decided to replace RK Pachauri, will join as Director TERI next month.
Tata Steel attempts to sell UK unit, again
  • Tata Steel is making yet another attempt to sell the struggling long products division of its UK subsidiary by entering into exclusive negotiations with Greybull Capital.
  • Tata Steel UK has signed a letter of intent with Greybull Capital for the potential sale of the long products Europe business.
1,671 projects got security clearance in 2015
  • As part of its ease-of-doing business policy, the Union government has lifted restrictions and given security clearance for 1,671 projects, almost double the number (815) in 2014.
  • In 2013, when the United Progressive Alliance was in power, 712 projects were given clearance.
  • An interesting aspect is the clearance given to 55 proposals for opening liaison offices in India. At least 58 proposals for foreign direct investment were cleared through the Foreign Investment Promotion Board route and 192 projects of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
Kholi Ventures commits $100 mn for Zynergy Solar
  • Zynergy Solar Projects & Services, promoted by first generation serial entrepreneur, Rohit Rabindernath, has secured an investment commitment of $100 million from UK-based Kohli Ventures over the next three years to support its expansion plans that include setting up of new Rs.400 crore solar manufacturing plant.
  • Zynergy, a Chennai-headquartered company which is now focused on rural-centric off-grid solar products, has so far received close to $10 million from global VC firm Kohli Ventures, which has now more than 26 per cent stake in the company.

RCom in talks with Aircel to combine mobile businesses
  • RCom is already in the process of buying Indian mobile telephony business of Sistema Shyam Teleservices under MTS brand.
  • In a move that may result into debt reduction of the company along with consolidation within the sector, Reliance Communications announced that it has entered into talks with shareholders of Aircel for a potential merger of the wireless or mobile businesses of the two companies.
Manu, Sumeeth clinch maiden GP title at Mexico Open
  • India’s men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy ended the season on a high by claiming their maiden Grand Prix title with a straight-game win over Thailand’s Bodin Issara and Nipitphon Puangpuapech in the finals of Mexico Open.
  • The third seeded Indian pair, who had reached the finals of US Open and Dutch Open, finally lay their hands on a grand prix title when they defeated Bodin and Nipitphon 22—20 21—18 in a 35-minute battle at the Centro Deportivo Chapultepec AC.
Sania & Hingis are ITF World champions
  • Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis was named as women’s doubles World champions by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in recognition of their stupendous success in season 2015.
  • Hingis is an ITF World champion 15 years after last being named World champion in singles in 2000.
  • Sania and Hingis joined forces in March this year but proved a force to be reckoned with in 2015, winning two Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open, and seven other tournaments.
India announce U-19 squad for 2016 World Cup, Ishan Kisan named captain
  • Ishan Kisan will lead the India team for the 2016 U-19 Cricket World Cup; Rishabh Pant to be his deputy.
  • The India cricket team for the U-19 World Cup to be held in Bangladesh from January 22 to February 14 next year was announced by BCCI on Tuesday in Mumbai.
  • Ishan Kisan, an opening batsman and a wicketkeeper from Jharkhand, will lead the team in the event while Delhi wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will be his deputy.
